I tried several USB keyboards and a couple of USB mice with 9front on both my Thinkpad R400s. None of them worked at all: pressing keys or moving the mice produced no reaction. /shr/usb/usbevent showed no messages when they were connected or disconnected. One of the mice has a visible light sensor; it switches off after 5 or 10 seconds. I checked all the mice and keyboards with FreeBSD on one of the R400s, they all work.
Problem appears with pc64 kernels compiled after sysupdate today and Oct 17, and 386 iso kernel dated Feb 17. I do not have an older kernel in my dump.
By contrast, a USB memory stick showed up normally in /shr/usb/usbevent, and I was able to boot 9front from it.
I tested a mouse and a keyboard with 9front on my X61 too; neither worked. The kernel was dated Apr 15.
I am very very sorry for wanting to use such terrible technology as USB. I will rectify my life course as soon as possible.

you are aware there's even xhci now? i haven't tried older external
usb keyboards/mice in a while on my t43 because the resolution is so
high i need to sit right in front of it anyway.
