What is the particular problem that prevents you from compiling the PCRE
as a shared library?

This is quite natural: since you haven't compiled the PCRE as a shared
library, the toplevel assumes that every object it needs for it is already
linked statically. This, however, is not the case: you'll have to create
a new toplevel and link it with the PCRE-library then.
