When trying to install one gets:
# ERROR: Leftover OCaml compilation files
Can anybody see a way to fix the opam package for menhir 20140422,
please?

Only 20160303 will compile in 4.03.0. This release was needed to fix the build system because of the new hygiene rules of ocamlbuild which was split off the compiler in 4.03.0.

Okay, thanks. Not sure I fully understand, because the reported error
does not come from the fact ocamlbuild was not installed. It was
installed in the 4.03.0 switch. Couldn't the older versions of menhir
have an additional dependency? But then the error message would still be
there so I'm guessing there is another issue I do not understand...

It comes from the fact that the hygiene rules of ocamlbuild were changed and that previous versions of menhir violate them.
