The following two messages from Shenghuo ZHU came through this list
recently. When I read them using pgnus 0.31 and Xemacs 20.4 Mule the
'From' lines in the summary display appear differently. A quick
glance at the headers reveals why, but as they were both sent using
pgnus 0.31 I'm wondering why they vary. Relevent headers follow.
This one appears as Chinese hieroglyphics:

If it makes any difference the first one was a multipart message (it
included a patch).

Perl is really designed more for the guys that will hack Perl at least
20 minutes a day for the rest of their career. TCL/Python is more a
"20 minutes a week", and VB is probably in that "20 minutes a month"
group. :) -- Randal Schwartz

Sorry for the puzzle. It is my fault for setting user-full-name a raw
(singlebyte) string.
(setq user-full-name "Chinese raw string")
When I tested, I eval'ed in a emacs buffer, so user-full-name was
actually decoded (multibyte) string. When I restarted the GNUS,
user-full-name was raw (singlebyte) string. At that time, I sent the
puzzling mail. Now I am using the following codes to make sure
user-full-name is multibyte string.
(if (and (fboundp 'multibyte-string-p)
(not (multibyte-string-p user-full-name)))
(setq user-full-name (decode-coding-string user-full-name 'cn-gb-2312)))
(I am lying. I do not set user-full-name directly, but use
gnus-posting-styles to set it.)
Wish this helps those with the same problem. I guess, this problem
still exists in non-mule emacs, :-(. I am going to find a way to by
calling rfc2047-encode directly.
