Hello--

when I expire articles from an nnimap group, they seem to
disappear. Looking at the same folder with mutt confirms
this. However, why I try to enter the group, I get a prompt like "How
many articles to download (default 300):".

Now, I can see no evidence of these articles on the server, yet gnus
seems to remember that they're there. Is there any way to change this
behaviour?

Cheers

Tiarnán

Gnus estimates the number of articles in a group based on the lowest
article number and the highest article number. This estimate can be
very wrong if there are holes in the numbering sequence. These holes
could come from moving articles out of the group, or
deleting/expiring them.

Oort Gnus has a workaround for this, I believe, so that the estimate
is better.

In that case, is there any way to inhibit the message asking how many
messages you want to download, and instruct gnus to get all of the
headers for this mailbox, regardless of how many messages it thinks
there are?

Cheers

See the variable gnus-large-newsgroup.

Thanks. That's certainly a temporary solution. What would be necessary
to convince Gnus to re-order the articles in a group, or reprocess
them to make "holes" disappear?

Note that the wrong-estimate problem has been fixed (in another way
than you are suggesting) in Oort Gnus.

But you can manually renumber the articles by moving them from a
group into the same group. So type C-u RET to enter the group,
showing all articles. Then M P a to mark all articles. Then B m to
move them -- as the target group enter the group they came from.

After this, article numbers will not start at 1, but the holes will
be gone and so the estimate will be right.
