So I have this new version of Gnus which automatically puts all
secondary nnimap and nntp servers under the Agent. Good.

I edit the list of categories: there is just one category, default,
and its predicate is true.

I set gnus-agent-handle-level to 2.

I set the level of the group nntp+gmane.emacs.ding to 2.

I hit J u on the group.

Nothing happens, except that Gnus tells me it's finished downloading
the group. There are approx 200 unread messages in the group.

Entering the group, marking some messages with @, then hitting J u,
downloads them.

But I have another group, nnimap+dtm:ir.discuss, also on level 2,
where J u fetches articles quite nicely.

What am I doing wrong?

You might have to explicitly add the group to a category (with a
setting of true for all articles). I've found similar problems in the
past when groups were supposedly assigned to the default category.

Also, I've often seen problems if you've entered the group before. IE,
J u may only properly download "new" articles.

That's possible.

Well, I'm sure there was not only unread ones (marked with space, not
tick), but also new ones (the `.' or `N' thing).

I haven't played with the agent in a while (too many problems), so
forgive my memory. I think it should succeed properly when articles
are '.' or 'N' marked (certainly for an 'N') but for simple ' ' marked
ones, you may or may not have problems.

(assigning them to a category may fix at least most of your problems.
It's the already-read-ones that I have the most problem with. I have
plenty of folders where I show all but expired, and "read" really
means "keep around cause I need to refer to them". When I go offline,
I typically need every article which is not-expired, and it's a
known-deficiency of the agent that it won't download read articles).

A friend of mine solves all this, by the way, but binding 'g' to both
fetching new mail and running the agent download process. He says he
has no problems like I have, as the agent will always get a copy
before you read it. Personally, I don't got offline "that much" and
hence don't want to always get stuff and would prefer to do it just
pre-trip or something...

Yeah, I also think I want the Agent to cache everything I've read,
and ideally, it should kind of keep fetching in the background for
those old articles...

But I could do a single-group scan while I'm out for lunch, one group
per day.
