I know, it's silly. But when I want to tell someone about gnus, I stumble
over the name because I'm not sure how it should be pronounced. It usually
comes out approximately like the English word 'noose'.

I pronounce it gnooze (as `nooze', but with a `g' in front; g as in
`gun'.)

I have heard an American pronnounce it as `news', but it's incorrect;
that's how Masanobu Umeda envisioned the pronounciation of the
original GNUS.

I've also heard it erroneously pronounced `gee-news'. I'm surprised
this subject isn't covered in the FAQ or Manual.

Hehe. Like the excited young hacker who started telling me about the
genome project. It was a bit before I realized he was talking about GNOME.

That pronunciation is quite wrong, because there used to be a
competitor to GNUS called `gnews'.

> I'm surprised this subject isn't covered in the FAQ or Manual.

I'll bear the blame for the Gnus FAQ. It *was* covered in the manual
at the time and that's why I never put it in the FAQ.

Quoting directly from the Gnus-5.0.13 manual:

The recommended pronunciation of the name this program is "ding
guh-noose", with "ding" being half-sung in a loud, high-pitched voice,
and "guh-noose" being grumbled and a disaffected fashion. Any
irritation and/or damage this name may cause you is not the
responsibility of the author, even though you might like to strangle him
  for the stupid idea.

If you want to investigate the person responsible for this outrage, you
can point your (feh!) web browser to
@file{http://www.ifi.uio.no/~larsi/}. This is also the primary
distribution point for the new and spiffy versions of Gnus, also know as
The Site That Destroys Newsrcs And Drives People Mad.

During the first extended alpha period of develpment, the new Gnus was
called "(ding) Gnus". @dfn{(ding)}, is, of course, short for @dfn{ding
is not Gnus}, which is a total and utter lie, but who cares? (Besides,
the "Gnus" in this abbreviation should probably be pronounced "news" as
UMEDA intended, which makes it a more appropriate name, don't you
  think?)

In any case, after spending all that energy with coming up with a new
and spiffy name, we decided that the name was @emph{too} spiffy, so we
renamamed it back again to "Gnus". But in mixed case. "Gnus" vs.
  @sc{gnus}.  New vs. old.

Speaking of pronunciation, I asked my Croation girlfriend how to
pronounce Hrvoje, so I've got a slightly better idea now (having heard
it from a native), although I'm not sure I could manage to say it
properly myself yet :)

Hrvoje dude, maybe you should record yourself saying your name (much
like the one with Linus saying his name and how he pronounces Linux) ?

I think I have a two-page description somewhere... I've written it
after I got fed up with explaining the procedure time and again. :-)
For those without the proper Slavistic skills, the pronounciation
could be approximated to Hurvoye, with the accent being on `ur' and
`e' being clearly heard. For bonus points, replace `ur' with rolled
r, as in Italian.

Not a bad idea! "Hello, I am Hrvoje Nikšić and I pronounce Iks-Emaks."

Oh. I though "Niksic" was pronounced that way -- "nicksick". :-)
How do you pronounce "¹"? Uhm. "Nik-one-iaeh".

You munged the MIME charset. Hrvoje's message was in ISO-8859-2.

Use the headers, Luke! It's iso-8859-2.

It's something like Nikshich, only ch is not really ch. This gets
very complicated. If I keep explaining it for some more time, I won't
be able to pronounce it myself. :-)

MIME? What's that, then? :-)

Now, how's an "s" with an upside-down "^" over it pronounced? "ssh"?

What is it then? This begins to sound like Humpty Dumpty. I, for one,
