Twitter and Facebook

Somebody asked me whether Gnus was ever going to support Twitter and
Facebook.  So I though: Perhaps?

I've looked at the Facebook API very quickly.  It seems to me that
there's no way for a "desktop app" (i.e., Gnus) to actually get at a
user's data?  Is that true?  That seems really weird.

There's a "twitel.el" package out there that lets you read Twitter
streams, so that seems more likely to implementable.  But there's
nothing of interest in Twitter (that I've seen) anyway, so...

Hi Lars,

I always liked and flirted the idea of being immersed into Emacs/Gnus
but for the kind of things I would prefer a whatever-to-mail scheme. 

At least that's what I did for RSS and thats what I had in mind these
days about twitter and a couple of other things I want to be notified
about.

With regards to the facebook API I had seen this little API browser that
had helped me a bit in understanding what is exposed and what's not:

Hello,

In a similar vain (but more useful IMO), there are all these web forums
(PHPBB et al., e.g., <http://plugcomputer.org/plugforum/>), which
ought to be accessible via our favorite newsreader.  :-)

It's sad how many times NNTP has been badly reimplemented...  I think
it's a resource drain to interface with web forums, unless the person
that implements the code is willing to maintain it.  Otherwise we end up
with another fragile nnweb backend.

Yes - sigh!

Somebody who knows PHP should volunteer to add an NNTP-interface to the
various webforum systems - if it could be snuck into the codebases, so
it was just on by default out-of-the-box...

Yes, though I think the forums can be read via RSS, so perhaps the only
extra thing to implement would be posting.

Besides, there’s hope because there are other people out there trying to
extract content from web pages, e.g., Weboob <http://weboob.org/>.

Heh... I actually follow one of the SqueezeBox forums via gmane.  It has
a very high traffic, and I think most of it is created from the web forum.

The forum is gated through a mailman managed mailing list, and someone
had already thoughtfully subscribed that list to gmane.

gmane.music.equipment.slimdevices.general for those that are interested.

I don't know?  Are there RSS feeds for, er, all the...  stuff...  on
Facebook?  (Is it noticeable that I'm not a Facebook user? :-)

And the same with Twitter.  If there is, it's a moot question.

And that requires a user to give an application complete access to
everything just to list out the user's complete stuff.

Looks like Facebook's API is designed to make it impossible to use
Facebook data without using a web browser (who had imagined that
Facebook was run by Bad People?  huh?), so I'm not feeling this project
at all.

I wouldn't bother with this.  RSS can handle most of the data collection.

It would be useful to implement a personal stream in a group, like the
gnus-read-ephemeral-bug-group does.  But I hope that's really low on
your priority list.
