Hello folks,
I decided to give Emacs 25.1.3 a try. Curiously, when I start gnus
(v5.13), it pauses part way through and asks me to confirm that I want
to rename ~/.gnus.registry.eioio to ~/.gnus.registry.eioio
Past that prompt, it seems to come up fine. Any thoughts? It doesn’t
do that under Emacs 24.

P.S. Random observations. I built Emacs 25 myself on Linux with all
the bells and whistles. Screen resizing during startup seems to
confuse it, parts of the frame don’t get repainted until I switch
windows. In Gnus message mode, typing “)” when there isn’t a matching
quote prints the “No matching parenthesis found” message in the
minibuffer then hangs, driving the CPU to 100%. So there are other
things wrong.

Surely it asks to rename to ~/.gnus.registry.eieio?

That was sort of a bikeshed fix that was made along with some other
tweaks to the registry, which made it into the version of Gnus which now
ships as a part of Emacs (which is why you're only seeing it now). The
typo wasn't doing anyone any harm, but my day job has to do with
editing, and I find that stuff hard to let go... :)

Yes, sorry. Typo on my part.

Just closing the loop…

And, now that I understand what it was renaming, I can confirm it only
asked once. Not sure how I confused myself about that. Possibly
because the incorrectly named file (the names were so close I thought
they were the same, which was what really confused me) was recreated
each time I started emacs 24.
And with respect to my other notes:

This was related to building --with-cairo, a risk clearly spelled out
in the docs that I somehow managed to read right past.

That’s not reproducible in 25.1.90, I’m pleased to report.
