Folks,
Ok - so I missed this one. I'm using nnml to read my email and the
summaries now contain a new mark on the left with which I am not
familiar. I'm sure that I just missed the appropriate thread - can
someone clue me in?

Are you talking about the period '.'? If so, that indicates you
haven't seen the message yet.

That isn't very clear -- the period means this is the first time
you've seen the message in a summary buffer.
