I thought that perhaps a white background would look better, but it
still looks as bad. So I think that the `create-animated-image' and
related functions do something odd when cycling through the images.

the image itself on

Some images look OK, while others have the "background shines through"
problem.

When you open the GIF in The Gimp and look at the Layers window, the GIF
has a background picture and the rest of the frames are of the "combine"
type.
Might Emacs be starting at the wrong end, or perhaps it doesn't support
"combine"?
