There is one thing called babel in org-mode, that is what lets org-mode
use other modes for a particular source code fragment, but I don't know
if there's a babel.el file related to that...? (it would probably have
been called org-babel.el if there was one...?)

Then have a look at ob.el and the ob-xxx.el files (for a number of
different xxx) in org.  Check http://orgmode.org/
Not sure what this has to do with gnus?

Me neither (but there is probably more going on with org and Gnus these
days, than with AuC-tex and Gnus).
