Can I use topic parameters to set group levels automatically?
Ie. specify that all groups subscribed under the topic mail will be
level 1, and all groups under news will be level 3.

Well, in oort I have added a "Subscribe Level" topic parameter which
sets the subscription level of automatically subscribed groups.
Perhaps this is what you're looking for?

Hm, I can't seem to find that option if hit G c (customize) on a
topic. (I also tried to add "Subscribe Level" as a topic parameter,
but that didnt' work out, either. (That was a long shot, anyway :-)
I use Gnus v5.9.0. Oort is the version in CVS? If so, I'll give it a
go. Thanks.

Yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that :) It's only in CVS.
The way I use it is this:
(setq gnus-subscribe-options-newsgroup-method 'gnus-subscribe-topics)
(setq gnus-subscribe-newsgroup-method 'gnus-subscribe-topics)
What I use this for (mostly) is for a topic called People. messages
from certain people (according to a BBDB field) get split into a
folder called mail.people.<name>. All groups automatically created in
the People topic get assigned a level of 1, like so:
((subscribe-level . 1)
...other topic params...)
(as viewed with G p on the topic)
