Hi,

the manual (especially the Emacs manual) says, that gnus uses the file
".newsrc". According to my Emacs instance, this isn't the case anymore.

So is this still true? Or does gnus use only ".newsrc.eld" these days?

Best regards, Michael.

This is controlled by `gnus-save-newsrc-file', which defaults to t, so I
think the manual is correct still...

Makes sense. But:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
gnus-save-newsrc-file is a variable defined in ‘gnus-start.el’.
Its value is t
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
$ ls -l ~/.newsrc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 albinus albinus 0 Mar 12  2012 /home/albinus/.newsrc
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

So the file isn't saved for 6 years ...

Best regards, Michael.

Hm... Well, it'll only get saved if you have groups from a "primary"
server. The idea being that people used different newsreaders to talk
to their main NNTP server, while you'd have a couple of groups from
other servers, too (that aren't saved in that file).

On my system the file ~/.newsrc is current. Do you have
gnus-current-startup-file or something like that changed?

Thanks, this explains it. I have no primary server:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
gnus-select-method is a variable defined in ‘gnus.el’.
Its value is (nnnil)
Original value was (nntp "news")
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

So there's no need to change the Emacs 26 manual here.

Best regards, Michael.

No, I haven't. But I have also no primary news server, and this let gnus
ignore my .newsrc file, as Lars has explained.

Thanks for your reply, and best regards, Michael.
