Hi
I noticed that some mailer put a charset looking like iso8859-15 or
even iso885915 instead of iso-8859-15 for example. In these cases, any
non ascii characters are displayed in octal form (\351, ...). If I
press "1 g iso-8859-15", everything comes back right.
Would it be possible to recognize this broken behavior automatically ?

Fine ! I now have this in my .gnus
(add-to-list 'mm-charset-synonym-alist '(iso8859-15 . iso-8859-15))
(add-to-list 'mm-charset-synonym-alist '(iso885915 . iso-8859-15))
Maybe this should be activated by default, or is it too costly ?

It *is* too costly.
Catering broken software encourages people to continue to use it.
This is not a good idea.
