I have one email group that consists solely of network monitoring system
updates. I'd like for messages in that group (and only that group) to be
unthreaded and sorted by date without manually choosing those options
whenever I enter it (and changing them back when I leave it). I can't seem
to find a great way to do this; is there one?

Use the group parameters, <info:/gnus/Group+Parameters>.
I.e. set `gnus-show-thread' to nil and `gnus-article-sort-functions' to
`(gnus-article-sort-by-date)' in the parameters.

With the exception of pluralizing `gnus-show-threads', that did it exactly!
