If anyone's running an Emacs with atomic window support and is
interested, there's a patch at bug#35873[1] which enables atomic windows
in Gnus. Essentially it treats a multi-window layout as a single window,
so when completions or help or helm or whatever pops up a new buffer, it
pops it up to the side of the whole window composition, rather than
squishing it between the summary and article buffers, or what have you.

Give the patch a try! You have to set `gnus-use-atomic-windows' to t.
