I'm afraid apt-get has turned me away from downloading, patching and
building. :-)
Gnus is the only package I use that lives from the CVS checkout.
But I put this in my ~/.emacs, and it takes me part of the way:
(setq display-time-24hr-format t)
(setq display-time-day-and-date t)
(display-time)
