Do you see a smiley image here? (gnus will stick it in):

If you do, please put the cursor upon it and hit C-u
C-x = runs the command what-cursor-position.
It will still show the image, while only reporting about the ";".
Not ideal.

This is not Gnus specific, it's an Emacs "issue".
