I have the same problem with todays CVS. It looks like the cause is an
old Gnus found somewhere in my load-path (although the path where I
installed the new Gnus appears first in load-path).

I installed the new one in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-list/gnus

The old old is in /usr/share/emacs/site-list/gnus/*.el and
/usr/share/emacs20/site-list/gnus/*.elc.

The .el files seem to be the problem. If I move them out of my
load-path, everything works fine.

Idea: maybe you are frobbing load-path too late. For example, if you
frob load-path from .gnus, then half of Gnus has already been loaded,
resulting in getting a mixture of old and new versions. Down this
path lies madness...

That's an interesting idea ...

Did you compile Gnus? Using configure + make? It looked as if
something went wrong during Gnus installation.
