Gnus hangs on articles

Hi,

I've a problem with Gnus hanging on all articles containing long sequences of
----'s. I've stopped it during one of such articles' rendering, and the
backtrace looks like this:

Character - should not be put into the syntax entry w.  Otherwise,
message-cite-prefix-regexp should be customized before Gnus is loaded.
