I will repeat what Lars said: nnething is not designed for reading
collections of mailboxes.  It is designed for reading collections of
arbitrary files.  Adding such format-specificness is contrary to its
purpose.

If you want to read such a collection, make a group for each
collection of mailboxes (nndoc, nnfolder, whatever) and then make an
nnvirtual group containing them all.
