Moin.
I don't understand this error but load-file'ing gnus-art.el fixes it
and makes Gnus start.
Latest CVS Gnus with latest CVS Emacs 21.

This looks like the `documentation' function has been defadviced.
Could it be that this advice is bugging out?

Not in my initialization files for Emacs and Gnus. Just tried with
emacs -q --no-site-file
and CVS Oort Gnus and still see this error. Gnus 5.9.0 from Emacs 21
load fine.
Maybe CVS Emacs 21 is broken?
Cheers, Ray

I saw the same error. However, M-x load-library gnus-art.el worked,
and gnus worked fine after that. Maybe there's something wierd with
the byte compiler.

There definitely is something wierd. 'documentation' on compiled
functions in Gnus seem to be screwed up.
(documentation 'gnus-article-hide-boring-headers)
"Toggle hiding of headers that aren't very interesting.
If given a negative prefix, always show; if given a positive prefix,
always hide."
(documentation 'gnus)
"ue #[(n expression) #@30 (\"\b 8\\207\" . [n expression])"
'gnus-art.el' was loaded as source. 'gnus.el' was loaded normally.

If recompiling Gnus doesn't help, I would think the problem is in
Emacs CVS. It has behaved weird for me for a couple of hours up to a
day now.
