I use (and like) ffap, but it has a strange interaction with the Gnus
group and summary modes. Without it, hitting `C-x C-f' in a group or
summary buffer gives me `~/' in the minibuffer. With ffap, `C-x C-f'
gives me `~' (without the slash).

In message mode and in other modes, `C-x C-f' works nicely, even with
ffap. For example, in this message mode buffer, I get `~/'.

Any ideas?

It sounds weird... I use it here (and also like it) and I get the
correct "~/" in the summary.

My relevant .emacs part is:

;; ffap is an enhanced find-file option.
(autoload 'find-file-at-point "ffap" nil t)

What's the version of ffap that you're using? Mine is the one that
comes with GNU Emacs 20.7. (ffap-version "1.9-fsf <97/06/25 13:21:41 mic>")

Still running Emacs 20.6, but the ffap-version thingy is the same.

Hm. So it must be some other strange setup.

Maybe it's the value of default-directory? No, that's "~/", also in
the summary buffer.

Isn't it any of your customizations?

I would try preventing all of your customized Gnus functions to start
(maybe a clean .gnus) and checking if it still happens...
