Having reupped 3 days ago, I just noticed I'm getting info pages from
5.9 gnus. (I recompiled emacs recently),so moved those to gnusX
in /usr/local/info thinking as usual, this would force info in
/usr/local/gnus/texi (my cvs gnus) to be read in. And in fact it does
appear in Info-default-directory list and in the right place:

("/usr/local/cvsbook.cvs/"
"/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/elib-1.0/texi" "/usr/local/wget/doc"
"/usr/local/bbdb/texinfo" "/usr/local/emacs-lisp-intro-1.05"
"/usr/local/lib/info" "/usr/local/url/texi" "/usr/local/w3/texi"
"/usr/local/gnus/texi" [...] )

But it isn't being read for some reason. The `dir' file in gnus/texi
exists as always and this has always worked before, but now I get:

C-h i m gnus <RET>
Composing main Info directory...done
Info-find-node: Info file gnus does not exist

Also $INFOPATH indicates it should work:
 $ echo $INFOPATH
/usr/info:/usr/local/info:/usr/share/info:\
/usr/local/tramp/texi/:/usr/local/gnus/texi:[...]

(No gnus info files are present in the first three listed there)

Has something been changed in gnus/texi/dir

Never mind... it turned out some semi-literate homeless person slipped
in while I wasn't home and renamed /usr/local/gnus/texi/gnus to
/usr/local/gnus/texi/gnusX as the first part of a campaign to make me
think I'm crazy.

Jeez.. why can't the police keep menaces like that off the street.
