Problems checking just mail

I like gnus.  It's cool.  Thanks, Lars. :-)

I get the little happy 'Mail' thing in my modeline.  I type '2 g',
which according to docs and urban legends is supposed to update all
groups of level 2 or lower.  This includes all my nnfolder:mail.*
groups, AFAICT.

So here's the snippet from my messages file.

Checking new news...
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail...
Getting mail from /var/mail/jmt...
Getting mail from /var/mail/jmt...done
Saving file /home/jmt/Mail/mail/misc...
Wrote /home/jmt/Mail/mail/misc
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail...done
Checking new news...done
No news is no news

Everything makes sense right up until 'No news is no news'.  If it
found stuff and stuck it in nnfolder:mail.misc, why didn't the choice
come up?  

The only way I can actually see the mail is to do a '3 g', which gets
my mail and news groups, and updates the thing.

Help?

If `3 g' updates the nnfolder group and `2 g' doesn't, that sounds
like the nnfolder group is on level 3.
