What the "**" really indicates is that there's been a change to the
dribble buffer. Which is kinda confusing. But `M-g' adds the change
to the dribble buffer, and `g' doesn't, which is what you're seeing
what you're seeing. I'm not sure myself whether this is a feature or
a bug.
