Probably a naive question, but is there a master change log somewhere?
Didn't see a likely suspect on ftp.gnus.org in the distribution or
patches directories.

No. Each Gnus series has separate ChangeLogs. So if you download the
last release in the 5.0 series, the 5.2 series, the 5.4 series and
5.6.27, you should have a pretty complete set of ChangeLogs.
wc says:
1880 6546 59636 ./gnus/sgnus/lisp/ChangeLog
3051 10282 101317 ./gnus/sgnus/lisp/ChangeLog.1
3161 10569 100116 ./gnus/sgnus/lisp/ChangeLog.2
693 2338 19185 ./gnus/sgnus/texi/ChangeLog
3149 11713 105265 ./gnus/dgnus/lisp/ChangeLog
3115 12726 111716 ./gnus/dgnus/lisp/ChangeLog.1
6964 23037 215521 ./rgnus/lisp/ChangeLog
590 2072 16934 ./rgnus/texi/ChangeLog
2967 9596 90386 ./qgnus/lisp/ChangeLog
929 3218 26333 ./qgnus/texi/ChangeLog
26499 92097 846409 total
Huh. Less than one meg of ChangeLogs.

Sounds easy enough -- thanks
Boy -- a lot of changes can be squeezed into less than a meg.
Less than a meg but think of the work it represents.
No .. better not, unless you are near a couch.
