When trying to compile the latest gnus from cvs (just updated) I get
this:

!! File error (("Cannot open load file" "mailheader"))

: 0 neotron@tezcatlipoca locate mailheader.el
/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/mailheader.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.4/lisp/mail/mailheader.elc

I use xemacs, and obviously there is no mailheader.elc anywhere in my
path. It seems like it used to be a part of Gnus but no longer is? It
was in 5.8.2 but was removed sometime after that if the cvs log is
correct.

I get the same error for "timer". What is the preferred way to
 compile 5.8.3?

mailheader.el is still in Gnus 5.8.3:

          7751 Oct 23 1998 mailheader.el

Has it been removed from the version in cvs? Note that it hasn't changed at
all, so you can just use any old one that you can find.

Right, it's not in the CVS. The "cvs log" shows that it's not tagged
for 5.8.3 at least.

: 1 neotron@tezcatlipoca cvs status mailheader.el

Ie the file _was_ deleted. Question is why and if it was on
purpose. :) Seems weird since it's still used and needed.

timer does not exist in XEamcs 20.4.

If 5.8.2 works for you, stick with it until 5.8.4 fixes the problem. Or
grab timer.el from FSF Emacs 20; I think it will work okay.

Put this in mail-source.el

(eval-and-compile
  (if (string-match "XEmacs" (emacs-version))
      (require 'itimer)
    (require 'timer)))

(instead of (require 'timer)).

I don't know if itimer is the same thing as timer, but it works fine.

It has become part of Emacs. I think that for XEmacs 21 you need to
install the Gnus package to get it.

So it seems. Kinda annoying to need the gnus package when I otherwise
install my own Gnus (from CVS). Could the file perhaps be there and
just not be used when you use standard emacs?

What do you mean, there but not used? In Emacs 20.5, the file is
$PREFIX/share/emacs/20.5/lisp/mail/mailheader.el*, and (featurep
'mailheader) tells me it is used right now.

So, it is there _and_ used.

I think, David wants to put mailheader.el in gnus/lisp and only use it
when running on XEmacs.

Norbert.

That is a correct assumption.

The following statement is not true. The previous statement is true.

For those of you that can't or don't want to follow xemacs-beta:

The package-maintainer Andreas Jaeger <aj@suse.de> has taken care of
mailheader.el, ie after the next package update the file will be
part of mail-lib. After this, we can remove it from the
gnus/lisp directory.
