Gnus cites weirdly

If i remove my .gnus and .gnus.elc files, Gnus inserts citations in the
normal way, ">  ".  if I don't, all citation marks, including the
poster's, become "|  ".  this happend after gnus 5.24.  I've removed
every reference to *-yank-prefix in gnus, but it doesn't help.

any clues?

What is `message-yank-prefix' and `message-cite-function'?

These variables do the same thing and they contradict each other.  I
think that the first one should be obeyed, unless you load messcompat,
in which case maybe the second one takes precedence.

Is .gnus.elc older or newer than .gnus?
