Using `g' to do a normal retreival seems not to be working at times.
I haven't really tracked this down extensively and was hoping maybe
someone would have seen something similar.

I have one nntp server:
 (setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.la.sbcglobal.net"))
under gnus-select-method and use news.gmane.org as a foreign server.

When I press `g' I see the gmane groups refreshed but not the main
groups. Looking at `^' to see if it is denied or something, it isn't.

I do have code to stop the agent from downloading groups above level3:
 (setq gnus-agent-handle-level 3)
But these groups are at level 3 and have always been excluded from
being ignored in the past.

Anyone seen a similar phenomena or have a guess where to look to
debug this?

I've similar problems. My local newsserver drops connection after 12
hours of inactivity. Gnus should recognize that this happened and send
authinfo one more time before getting the group counts, but it just
hangs, closing the connection to the server and reopening it then helps
me in those cases.

Perhaps something similar is biting you?

I've seen that in the past too and knew about the off on trick. This
is different. There is no hang. The process flashes by as if it had
been done but the groups are not refreshed. Pressin M-g on
individual groups will refresh them.

Hm... Could you try moving a couple of these groups to, say, level 1
and see whether that makes any difference?

This was the same problem posted under:
  From: Harry Putnam <hgp@sbcglobal.net>
  Subject: get-new-news misbehaving?
  Newsgroups: gnu.emacs.gnus
  Date: Thu, 02 Jan 2003 05:05:43 GMT

Your suggestion there was to set `nntp-server-list-active-group' to
nil.

I did that and it cured my problem. So apparently server related.
