The attached message was sent from netscape at work (where my
websurfing facilities are better) to my home email account, which I
typically read offline via fetchmail, qmail, and gnus.

When I hit space on this message in the summary buffer, I get:

I have to hit ^G to stop the contacting of the server, since it won't
work when I'm not connected.

I believe that gnus should not attempt to contact the server because I 
am reading an email.

There are also a couple of other problems with gnus once I have read
this message:

        In general, the background (in xemacs 20.4) is grey; after
        reading this kind of message, it is white.

        I can't reproduce this this morning, but last night after
        reading this message (or possibly a similar one), I attempted
        to read a normal text mail message, with quoted text from my
        previous message to my correspondent interspersed with his
        replies, and my text was fine, but his replies had
        disappeared.  ^L didn't display them.
