Has any work been done on the maildir backend that was requested in
March? With qmail becoming a more widespread MTA, it'd be nice to get
off the mailbox wagon.

Just yesterday I sent a patch to this list which enables Gnus to fetch
mail from a maildir. It's quite slow, though :-(.
If you missed it, you may find it on the newsserver sunsite.auc.dk in
the newsgroup emacs.ding (which contains, in fact, this list).
