This reminds me: message/rfc-822 (and perhaps message/anything) should
probably be displayed as text by default.

find-charset-region always returns 'ascii in my message buffers, even
when they contain non-ASCII characters; could you revert this or make
message buffers default to multibyte? FWIW, I'm using FSF Emacs 20.3
and call setup-latin1-environment in my .emacs.

I still see repeated "fetching mail from pop" messages when I use
"2 g". :-( (But at least the other groups don't get deactivated
any more.)

I still have to say nnml-generate-nov-databases to get at my mail. I
don's see any changes in individual .overvew-files before and after the
process, is there anywhere else I should look?

Shouldn't this be `(eolp)'?

Yes, but although it is printed several times, it actually only ends
up getting done once.

As another note, the code seems to indicate that this is
`nnmail-fetched-sources' and `nnmail-get-new-mail', as opposed to
`mail-source-fetched-sources' and `mail-source-fetch'.

Likewise, with just a local spool file as a source, I get as many
"Reading incoming mail from file..." messages as I have level 2 nnml
groups.

Is this just unintended noise in the minibuf now, or is it actually in
search of new mail 32 times (in my case)?

Perhaps the thing to do is just narrow to the part and then run all
the article display things -- in the article buffer, instead of putting
it in a different buffer...

I've now reverted it.

Do you use a `directory' mail source?

It looks like it messaged before it checked whether it needed to fetch
mail. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.77.

When this is run, the buffer is narrowed to one line (excluding the
newline), so `(eolp)' and `(eobp)' are equivalent here.

This does sound like the way to go. 'Twould be nice, though, were
there some visual clue in the buffer where each mime part starts and
ends. Perhaps if the button were still displayed but altered somehow....

Another bug with this: read one message, hit c-c c-f to make a new
forwarded message but don't send it. Then go back to the summary buffer
and read another message. Hit c-c c-f to forward that one. When the first
forwarded message is actually sent, the text of the second forwarded
message will be included, rather than the intended text.

>	(message-included-forward-headers): Removed.

I can understand that this is the right thing to do in that if one is going
to forward a message, the whole thing should just be sent. But (for me at
least) the more common case is that whoever I'm forwarding something on to
is going to be unhappy to get all of those Received headers, etc.

So do both of these together suggest that it would be better to inline the
message immediately, with appropriate MML stuff around it (which would
allow manual header pruning, at least). Is that possible in MML?

Unfortunately narrowing is not recursvice, this might cause problems
when there is message/rfc-822 as part of message/rfc-822.

Perhaps working on another buffer and copying with all properties...

nnmail-spool-file's value is

((directory :path "/usit/sauron/u4/roffe/.vm-spool-files/" :suffix ".spool"))

but it was

((directory :path "/usit/sauron/u4/roffe/.vm-spool-files/" :suffix "spool"))

and that made all the difference.

Yes yes yes. That would be very cool.

Narrowing is recursive, as long as you never `widen', but just
`save-restriction'.

My problem with `message/rfc822' is that it tries to mimic an Article
buffer, yet it doesn't function like one. For example, it hides the
headers. Fine; I press `t' to get all the headers, and am greeted by
an error.

message/rfc822 should either be displayed as a "proper" article (no
matter whether that entails using a separate buffer), or as plain
text. These cross-breeds make it a pain.

Yup. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.77.

Well, if the recipient has a MIME-capable mail reader (which is not
unlikely), then I would guess that the mail reader will hide most of
the headers. Of course, I could be wrong. :-) Could someone check
with, say, Outlook and Netscape what they do?

Well, why not just format each message/rfc822 part in the article
buffer as if it were an article? I don't really see any reason that
shouldn't work. It'll be raht purdy. Er -- perhaps I should just
write it right away. Urm. No, I'm too buzzed by the symposium thing,
and the developments at work, and by installing Gnus 5.7 on the FSF
machines tonight sometime.

Anyway.

Will `t' to reveal all headers work in that case? Or any other
command that normally helps me beat article contents into shape?

Er, no. Good point. Er. *insert vision of Lars contemplating*

MIME is hard. Let's go shopping.

A very similar setup seems to work for me under 0.79, except that I have
:suffix "". Have you considered using edebug to find out what happens?

It works for you exactly because you have an empty suffix. The regexp
matching on spool names was optimized so well for that case that it
screwed up all the others :-)

Others already have. Lantz Moore and I both figured out the right fix
and posted patches (his is a bit cleaner than mine and will make in
into 0.80 according to Lars). Check the list archive for an immediate
fix.
