Since my crash problems and my change of "nnfolder:" to (nnfolder "")
in the group list in .newsrc.eld, it seems that when I get new mail it
checks twice hence taking longer.
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail (17 new)...done (not quite right)
(pause and another status message)
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail (no new mail)...done
(finale)
Is there something specific that I can do to correct his behavior?

This probably means that Gnus thinks that you have two different
nnfolder servers in there somewhere. Check the secondary select
methods and the select methods on your nnfolder groups.
