pgnus-0.74 signaled "buffer is read-only: #<buffer "*Article*">"
ieft-drums-remove-comments() which is an alias of
mail-header-remove-comments.

This didn't happen in pgnus-0.56. The line

  (delete-region (point) (progn (forward-sexp 1) (point)))

in ietf-drums-remove-comments in ietf-drums.el is the cause of the signal.

The debug info, raw article buffer and backtrace are attached.

Is this a known problem? (for some reason I was removed from the list for 2
weeks and have to re-subscibe it. so i am still catching up with the latest)

Check out the display of the referenced article in gnu emacs with
gnus-treat-display-xface set to t....

(Cf next page for spoiler:)

\f

The ref'ed article has an xface header, but also has a 822 attatchment
which has an xface header. At least in pgnus-0.73 in emacs 20.3.1, xv
pops up with the first xface, quits w/o user interaction and then pops
up with the second xface.

The xface headers in attatchments probably shouldn't be auto-displayed
unless and until the attachment is viewed, ja?

I don't think that is the cause. ieft-drums-remove-comments() still signals
when gnus-treat-display-xface is set to t. Also, I am using xemacs-20.4 so
xv shouldn't pop up with xface.

I think I've located and fixed this bug. Could you check after
Pterodactyl Gnus v0.75 has been released to see whether things start
working?

Well, in 0.75 all the calls to `mail-header-parse-content-type' have
`ignore-errors' slapped around them, so I think this is probably fixed
now.

Now I get the following:

*Article* buffer scrolls to the end
an xv instance pops up with a face
	that xv quits w/o intervention
the *Article* buffer narrows or widens (can't tell which)
	another xv instance pops up
xv quits again w/o a keypress
the *Article* buffer narrows or widens (can't tell which)
	another xv instance pops up
xv quits again w/o a keypress
the *Article* buffer scrolls to the top (as normal)
a fourth xv instance shows up

The 3rd and 4th xv's show the same image (the xface specified in the
`top-level' headers.

The first xv, though, I've discovered is the jpeg image which is
inlined in the attatchment, not the xface in the attachment. (Said
jpeg is about the same size as an xface, hense my mis-interpretation
of what I was seeing. I manually viewed each xface and that jpeg just
now, and do not think the attachment's xface is showing up, only its
inlined jpeg....

In short, the rl question is whether an attachment's inlines should be
inlined in the parent message, or only when the attachment is viewed.

PS. Appologies if this is incoherent; I'm recovering from a touch of
     flu. :(

The latter.

Do you have full automatic viewing of everything switched on, by any
chance? Then the RCF822 part may be "viewed" in a different buffer
that, perhaps, Gnus is not showing you, or something.

Not by choice, if so. :)

I do have '(global-font-lock-mode t nil (font-lock)) and in my
(custom-set-variables) and font-lock-global-modes is also set to t.
I don't know whether that matters....

By default, images that require an external viewer (like xv) aren't
shown automatically, so that leads me to believe that there's
something customized somewhere.

Er -- you don't use TM, by any chance?

No. I did have gnus-treat-display-xface set to t to test it, though.

Yup. Reading that message w/ gnus-treat-display-xface nil stops the
jpeg from auto-displaying.

I don't understand how `gnus-treat-display-xface' could possibly be
viewing any JPEG things.

What Emacs version are you using, by the way? Your messages seem to
be going out without a User-Agent header, which is annoying.

I agree. Nontheless, it does.

Lars> What Emacs version are you using, by the way? Your messages

(emacs-version) returns:

"GNU Emacs 20.3.1 (i386-redhat-linux, X toolkit)
 of Fri Oct 2 1998 on porky.redhat.com"

And the User-Agent header on a posting I recently made to
gnu.emacs.help reads `Gnus/5.070075 (Pterodactyl Gnus v0.75)
Emacs/20.3'

It has only been about a decade since I've done any real debugging of
elisp, but I'll step through reading that article if someone will
remind me /how/... :*

(BTW: Did I mention I use nnmh for mail?)

`M-x edebug-defun RET' on `article-display-x-face' in gnus-art.el.

OK. I was not seeing what I thought I was seeing.

Slowing it down by running it in edebug makes it clear. The same
Xface -- the correct one -- is displayed four times. Each time,
delete-process is called on the "article-x-face" process before
a new one is started, which explains the flashing xv(1)s. I'm
still not certain *why* it loops like that. Seems that

	(when (stringp gnus-article-x-face-command)
	      (setq last t))

doesn't always set last.

But only due to somethign strange in message <yj9679rktir.fsf@adobe.com>.

I wonder whether it has anything to do with the fact that the 3rd body
part is a message/rfc822 but is declared to be text/plain and has name
and filename set to *Article*. (Incidently, is there a way to bypass
the asterisks-mean-bold behavior while composing a message?)

Anyway, the bug I thought I was seeing isn't there, and what is is
merely cosmetic, and I bet rare as a, err, um, .... (Well, whatever
it was I was going to write, it is so rare I've forgotten what it is
called. :) ((And you really don't think I could make up something
like that? Do you? Well, maybe. But not this time. Really.))

Hm. It looks like the function searches the article body as well,
which it shouldn't do. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.76.
