Something between pgnus-0.13 and 15 is causing a situation where I
can't open any groups. Back trace:
Hope the long lines survive. I was afraid wrapping them would cause a
worse problem.

I'm unable to reproduce this bug:

(rfc2047-decode-string "Re: Grep for token under cursor")
=> "Re: Grep for token under cursor"

Does it happen all the time, or just sometimes?

Sorry, I don't understand the significance of the "Grep" comment

>
> Does it happen all the time, or just sometimes?

Every time -- makes any use of gnus under pgnus-0.15
impossible.. nothing can be opened.

Here are the steps that produce the problem for me:

Conditions: pgnus-0.15 and pgnus-0.13 installed
             Running emacs-20-2 (MBSK version)

1) Running gnus in pgnus-0.13 Shut down gnus - edit .emacs to point
   to pgnus-0.15.

2) Fire up gnus, pgnus-0.15 ... comes up normally ( *messages* encluded at end)

3) attempt to open nnml groups (nnml:ding.mail)
The error message comes up (or backtrace with debug on)
   Group cannot be opened

4) Attempt to open news group (gnu.emacs.gnus) an NNTP read starts
then the error comes up. Group can not be opened

5) Shut down gnus edit .emacs to point to pgnus-0.13, start up and
   every thing works normally.

I've included the *Messages* buffer of starting pgnus-0.15

Comparing the *Messages* buffer of both startups with the emacs
`compare' tool, the only differences are that in the pgnus-0.15
*Messages* the `Invalid coding system: iso-8859-1' appears

In the pgnus-0.13 *Messages* buffer, the actual opening of the two
groups appears.

I don't think that will work.

That's the problem... decode-coding-region is a MULE thing.

Has something new concerning Mule been added in p-gnus.0.15?

The mbsk version runs pgnus-0.13 ok.

So does this mean that emacs with MBSK will not be supported beyond pgnus-0.13?

Yes. It now decodes everything.

I haven't decided yet. It depends on how much work that would be.

I think it's little more work than supporting 20.3 in unmolested
unibyte mode, which has to happen anyway. I'm prepared to do it,
having beaten on this sort of thing before.

I think it can wait a bit, though. We should get pgnus working on a
plain Emacs 20.3 release first, since that is something that is very
likely to be very widely used in the future.
