I'll float this idea to see if others have worked on a similar idea.

What I'd like is for Gnus to, upon entering group, hide threads that
are still being actively discussed, showing me only threads where all
posts are older than X days or hours.

Is this best done by hacking around with the summary-mode limiting
features?  Or is there some other way I can achive this?

I think you'll have to hack around with those functions; yes.  They
are, however, kinda, uhm, complex.  So it might not be obvious how to
achieve this.  (It's not obvious to me, at least.  :-))
