I upgraded to Oort Gnus 0.16 and lost my .newsrc. It needed to be
rebuilt from scratch, so that took me a bit. When I started up again,
I noticed a huge huge performance problem when starting up Oort. The
"k-meter" displayed when starting up was moving very, very slowly --
one k every second or two -- but once I got going, I could go to
this newsgroup at quimby very quickly, and I am reasonably fast at
accessing my default news server.
My ISP offers a secondary news server, and I can access that very
quickly when it's a secondary server in Gnus. I changed my .gnus.el
to use this secondary news server as my primary news server in Gnus,
and I got the same very, very slow behavior. This tells me that it's
a Gnus thing.
Has anyone else observed this problem? What other information should
I collect to help resolve this issue?
Jack.

Yup. Fix in Oort Gnus v0.17 (i. e., CVS).

So the problem is that it's very slow fetching the active file? Is
`B nntp some.server' equally slow?
