Trying to enter a group fails with the error message
"eval: Symbol's value as variable is void: gnus-carpal"
"make bootstrap" doesn't help.
but M-: (setq gnus-carpal nil) RET does.

Perhaps you have some local add-on that references gnus-carpal? It's
definitely gone from both Emacs and Gnus:
