I just re-read a mail with the following MIME headers (note "charset"!):

    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso8859-1
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

I wondering whether I'm allowed to vote that Gnus should recognize those
settings as well: "iso[-_]?8859[-_]?1" ?

You can, but I don't think that Gnus should go around trying to "fix"
the charset specified by other software. Down that road lies
madness.

Agreed -- but I didn't vote to "fix" typos like "iso-8895-1".  I didn't
how generous is the glibc; at least the glibc treats LANG=de_DE and
LANG=de_de as equal -- okay, not LANG=de-de nor LANG=deDE...

Maybe, you're completely right ;-)
