There must be a way to do it but I just couldn't find out from the info
pages. How do I mark a set of messages (a thread, or process marked, may or
may not be in sequence) dormant? Is there any general marking command like
'M M' but applies to multiple messages?

You're looking for `M-&'. If you have process marked some articles,
say, a thread with `T #' you can make the marked articles dormant with
`M-& ?'.

Thanks! How could I forget that? :-)

It works nicely for both process marked messages or messages in selected
region.
