Indentation in message-mode

Indentation in message-mode

I usually write letters in the following format:

Joe,
   Too bad about Norway's loss, eh?  You know a lot of the guys who work
   on Gnus are Norwegian, so I was ....
  
and message-mode plus auto-fill-mode now (in 5.6.22) formats it as
above.  But it used to look like this:

Joe,
   Too bad about Norway's loss, eh?  You know a lot of the guys who work
on Gnus are Norwegian, so I was ....

I prefer the second indentation format.  How do I get that back again?
Naturally, I would prefer it if the default in message-mode was moved
back to the previous behavior, but if there is some reason not to do
that, then telling me what variable to set would do.

The behavior you describe is due to adaptive-fill-mode.  Investigate
the variables adaptive-fill-regexp and
adaptive-fill-first-line-regexp, which are buffer-local and have
different values in message-mode.
