My server buffer looks like this:
{nnml:sent} (opened)
...
{nnml:sent} (opened)
...
{nnml:sent+nnml+sent:news.current} (opened)
{nnml:sent+nnml+sent:mail.current} (opened)
...
It seems mostly harmless, but it's annoyed me for ages.
How can I clear it out back to just the single nnml:sent?

You need to look for groups from these servers and then kill them.
Maybe "A A" helps. Try hitting "s" after that. I hope the groups
are then gone from .newsrc.eld.

That helped, in that it removed the duplicate of {nnml:sent}, but
unfortunately the above still appear.

Try exiting Gnus, then C-x C-f ~/.newsrc.eld RET, then search for the
strings. What do you see? Any groups from these servers?

Nope. The substring "nnml+sent" only appears in the nnml+sent: groups
I expect to be there. Damnedest thing, eh?
