I have (add-hook 'text-mode-hook 'turn-on-auto-fill), and this leads
to headers like this:

/----
| Subject: this is a long header which has many words, just to provide
| an example what happens
\----

Is it possible to make it so that Gnus (Emacs) _automatically_ adds
the space in the second line? Auto-fill in the message body shouldn't
change, of course.

An alternate approach, a bit pedestrian perhaps, is just to disable
auto fill in headers (but leave it as normal in the message body of
course).

on a somewhat related but totally opposite note, has anyone done the
reverse? i.e., enable auto-fill in the headers *only* (very useful
for abbrevs).

thanks,
