Garbage when viewing HTML with w3m

When I display the following message with w3m, I get character
garbage.  I wonder where that comes from?

I'm attaching a screenshot.

III. Trendwatch: König Günther I.

Da haben sie es ja wieder ganz schön krachen lassen, die Briten.
Nein, gemeint ist nicht der Elfmeter von David Beckham, der der
englischen Nationalmannschaft das 1:0 gegen Argentinien gesichert
hat, sondern das 50. Thronjubiläum von Queen Elisabeth II. Zwei
Extra-Feiertage hat die Queen Ihren Untertanen spendiert, diese
dankten es ihr - und taten tagelang nichts anderes als feiern,
feiern, feiern. Da kommt man als Einwohner einer Republik, in der
die Machthabenden derzeit außer gelegentlichen Schlammschlachten
nicht viel von sich hören lassen, etwas ins Träumen: "Was wäre,
wenn...".

Kurzum: Auch wir wollen Extra-Feiertage, wir wollen goldene

der im Fernsehen seit Jahr und Tag mit Millionen um sich schmeißt?
Egal... es sei: König Gühnther I.! Und jetzt her mit den Millionen!

Works for me (both, with the attached message and on the original
message from GMX, too). My settings:

Maybe the difference is that I use w3mmee?  What do people think?  (I
like to see CJK.  Does that mean I need a way to toggle between plain
w3m and w3mmee if I want to see those messages?)

When I use (setq w3m-type 'w3mmee), the accented characters [ÄÖÜäöüß]
are no longer displayed properly [1], when they were written as 8bit
characters (and not as &aulm;, ...). Maybe w3mmee doesn't handle the
charset correctly:

Do you mean character garbage a lot of [cid]s?
It seems that the html message is broken, those cid tags do not
point to the correct places.  Netscape 7.0PR1 and 6.23 do not,
but 4.78 shows many broken links for your archived article in:

I'm talking about the non-ascii (8bit) Latin-1 characters that we
see.  For example, there is a sentence which starts out right ("Das
Beste aus unseren Channeln - fü"), but then it ends with a lot of
strange 8bit characters ("ò Óéå áõ...").  Can you see that in the
screenshot?  There are three blue links introduced with "-->" and
it's below the third one.

Oops, I could see them!  That should be a real problem.
Unfortunately, I don't have w3mee and I can't reproduce it in my
environment.  I'll forward those materials to the emacs-w3m
community.

Yes we are there and Teranishi-san gave us a hint that the
emacs-w3m in the CVS trunk may have been fixed by Shirai-san.
He has changed the default value for w3m-coding-system to
iso-2022-7bit-ss2 for w3mmee at 2002-04-08.  May be just that
change fixes your problem, otherwise you can check out the most
recent emacs-w3m from anonymous CVS[1] or ViewCVS[2].
