I've been using
(setq gnus-summary-make-false-root 'dummy)
for most of all past eternity, but in recent Oort, it causes dummies
to be created for _every_ article, even when there's only one, or the
subthread in *Summary* is entirely self-contained.
I'm using 'empty for now, to reduce the annoyance, but can anyone tell
me why this new behavior has come along?

Add this to your ~/.gnus
;; only make the dummy root when there are threads
(setq gnus-summary-make-false-root-always nil)
For the reason why, see the thread at

Defaulting to t? Good heavens, *why*?
(Not intending to shoot the messenger; thanx, Mark. Just wondering.)

It's a bug. :-)
I've now defaulted it to nil.
