When getting mail using 2g (mail groups on level 2) sometime Gnus
takes a long time and I am left with what looks like a list of every
newsgroup on the server, and their status. Has anyone seen anything
like this before?

If you've actually bumped "2b" instead of "2g", yes, you will get
everything, because you will have inadvertently asked for a "bogus
newsgroups check." Check `C-h l' next time it happens, and see if
you're just having a keyboard fumble.
