I have a nnml group which makes Gnus emit an annoying beep every time
it is entered. I would very much have liked to turn this off, but I
haven't been able to figure out what causes it. It's not caused by an
error message, as far as I can tell.

This happened both on 20.2 w/MBSK and without tm and on XEmacs 20.4
(I'm not sure if this is compiled with or without MULE).

Here's the .newsrc.el entry for the group:

("nnml:mail.dod" 1 ((1 . 4309)) ((reply 196 201 203 232 261 (269 . 270) 275 278 323 331 448 451 468 470 478 481 485 (487 . 488) (490 . 491) (493 . 495) 521 534 545 556 566 578 610 612 673 703 777 791 811 817 871 887 889 892 953 (957 . 958) 967 1117 1211 1229 1383 1493 1738 1783 1798 1826 2364 2369 2376 (2382 . 2383) 2390 2397 (2401 . 2402) 2414 2458 2460 2494 2530 2550 2554 2578 2586 2598 2643 2648 2651 2697 (2702 . 2703) 2708 (2710 . 2711) 2716 2720 2725 (2727 . 2728) 2739 2742 (2746 . 2747) 2750 2777 2779 2811 2825 2853 2859 (2861 . 2862) 2875 2877 (2882 . 2883) 2888 2891 2909 2915 2930 2943 2950 2963 2974 2986 2991 2994 2997 2999 3005 3010 3012 3018 3024 3048 3086 3109 3111 3124 3131 3136 3149 3151 3155 3157 3163 3165 3167 3176 3180 3186 3191 3198 3200 3207 3225 3238 3286 3290 (3292 . 3293) 3299 3309 (3313 . 3314) (3317 . 3318) 3329 3332 3336 3342 3353 3358 3365 3377 (3385 . 3386) 3397 3401 (3407 . 3409) 3418 3422 3429 3433 3436 3438 3443 3445 3522 3528 3533 3538 (3543 . 3

Nope. I did a visual check right now without seeing anything
strange. Anything in particular I'm supposed to look for?

I'll do a
	M-x gnus-cache-generate-nov-databases RET
when I leave for the day and see if this fixes it.

This didn't work... but at least it seems to have zapped all those
pesky cached articles...:-/

Have a peek in the *Messages* buffer if you hear a beep.

That's the first thing I did (in 20.2 MBSK which needs recompilation
of Gnus and init files to start working again) and there was nothing
there.

I now read mail and news in XEmacs 20.4 which I had to start using to
get tm to work again (the alternative would have been to downgrade to
19.34), and XEmacs doesn't seem to have a *Messages* buffer.

Press `C-h l' instead. Much better than *Messages*.

If you really want a *Messages* replacement, switch to " *Message-Log*"
(note the space.)

Ah-mazing! This one had

...
Recent minibuffer messages (most recent first):

And ~/Mail/mail/dod/.overview:461 looked like this:
	3798ne.oslo.metis.no mail.dod:3714

Removing that line got rid of the beep. Regenerating all NOV files
using
	M-x gnus-cache-generate-nov-databases RET
didn't fix it, and didn't seem to do anything except to lose me my
cached articles in newsgroups. The cached articles are still in the
.newsrc.eld files, as far as I can tell,
	("comp.risks" 3 ((1 . 764)) ((cache 180 (184 . 186) 190 (194 . 195) 197 (200 . 202) 207 (209 . 210) 212 216 (223 . 227) 229 (231 . 236) (238 . 240) 245) (tick 736 (763 . 764))))

But they don't show up when I enter the newsgroup.
