"Offline"/"online" are yucky words. It brings to mind M$, BBS's and
other vulgar things. However, I don't really know any other
expressions that cover the same ground.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Connected/disconnected.

One with the world/Alone.

One advantage of off/ofline is that the words don't take up much space.

Hey! You should show a little more respect for those brave BBS SysOps and
their patrons who pioneered this little thing we call the Internet.

> Anybody have any suggestions?

"Wired" and either "Tired" or "Unwired"?

Frankly, I think "Online" and "Offline" are fine.

I would definitely go with "disconnected"/"connected" modes. Not only
do I think that sounds better, it will nicely fit with existing
terminology when people end up using nnagent and nnimap together.
(i.e once both of those packages are released as part of Gnus)

"disconnected operation" is an accepted term for things like this.
There are even network filesystems that support disconnected operation
by supporting any accesses that can be fulfilled from the cache and
merging any writes with changes on the network when reconnected.

How about "Standby"/"Active"? Never really completely "offline" - just
waiting for the next connection..., so "standby" make sense :-).

Uhm, I had no idea Wired and such had any connection to `Wired'. I
simply like the term better than online.

I would have preferred wired/unwired, if there hadn't been a strong
chance of getting sued for it... well... wired/unwired you may get by

I like this one too.

Er...that would be a trademark. A patent is for technology. And I
think copyrights have something to do with software interfaces. :-/

Anyway, even if MTV had trademarked "UnPlugged", they could only
enforce it if there was a potential for someone to confuse our use of
it with theirs (or something like that). Clearly that won't be a
problem (unless you start getting famous musicians to start recording
gnus startup jingles ;-)

FWIW,
Michael

Should't this be `gnus-plugin'?

Everybody's doing plugins nowadays, no?
